Bandera was born on 1 January 1909 in the village of Staryi Uhryniv in the Kalush Raion in what then was Eastern Galicia. He was the son of the local Greek Catholic parish priest Andriy Bandera (1882-1941) and his wife Myroslava née Głodzińska, daughter of a Greek Catholic priest.
As an active member of the UVO and OUN, he has the legally defined status of a Fighter for the Independence of Ukraine in the 20th Century. In 2010, he was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine, but in the same year, the Decree of the President of Ukraine on awarding Stepan Bandera this title was canceled by the decision of the Donetsk District Administrative Court. He is considered a national hero of Ukraine. In 2008, he was recognized as the third out of a hundred great Ukrainians, after Yaroslav the Wise and Mykola Amosov, based on the results of votes in the "Great Ukrainians" public opinion poll.
